Skipp Family Line
Robert1 E. Skipp Sr. was born (about 1844) in England (possibly Essex) and came to America between 1872 and 1874. Sometime prior to 1871, he married a woman named Mary (born about 1846). Robert and Mary had at least four children and perhaps more (see notes regarding Alice below). We do not know Mary's maiden name, however, from letters to her children, we do know she moved back to England after Robert's death in 1886 and remarried -- taking the name of "Hill." Mary Hill died shortly after her son Edward on November 13, 1900 at the age of 54. She is buried in the Bocking Cemetery, Essex, England.
On June 25, 1880 Robert1 E. Skipp Sr. applied for U.S. citizenship and on October 20, 1882, he swore the oath of allegiance and became a citizen of the United States at Erie County, New York. Joseph Schueler and Joseph Fischer attested to his having been a resident of the U.S. for the preceding five years. Robert1 Sr. died September 5, 1886 at the age of 42. Records indicate he was originally buried at the "North Street" cemetery in Buffalo, N.Y. Later, on April 24, 1901, he (along with Edward, Lizzie, and Alice Skipp) was moved to the Buffalo Cemetery where he now rests in Lot 11, Section E, Grave 126. The female named "Alice," who is buried in the same grave with him is a mystery. Cemetery records indicate she died in 1878 but tell us nothing more about her. Based on her date of death, we can only surmise that she may have been Robert's1 sister or daughter.
Charles2 Skipp (Robert1), is believed to have been the oldest sibling, so he was probably born prior to 1871 in England. He was also married twice to two women whose first names were both “Lizzie.” The first wife's maiden name is believed to have been Lizzie Kate and the second wife’s maiden name is unknown. Charles and his wives lived in Bloomfield, N.J. At present, we do not know what became of Charles. Here is a tin-type picture of Charles and Lizzie Skipp taken at Coney Island (probably before 1900).
Harriet2 “Agnes” Skipp (Robert1) was born May 1, 1872 in England and died May 26, 1962. in Buffalo, Erie County, N.Y. Her husband’s name was Herman Szen who was born April 1869 in Germany and died in 1910. The 1900 Federal census indicates Herman worked as a ships carpenter. Brother-in-law, Edward2 Skipp was also living with them at the time. Agnes and Herman had two sons named Henry (born August 1892) and Albert (born April 1895). Henry, the oldest of the two brothers, married Roselyn Georger and Albert married Annie (aka Anna) Rooney.
Robert2 Skipp Jr. (Robert1) was born March 31, 1874 in Buffalo, N.Y. and died April 24, 1946 of a ruptured appendix in the Deaconess Hospital of Billings, Montana. His father's name was Robert1 E. Skipp Sr. On September 6, 1906, Robert2 married Margaret "Maggie" May Irons. Maggie May Irons-Skipp was born February 12, 1881 in Tom's River, New Jersey and died July 31, 1961 in her home at 543 Laurel Ave., Pacific Grove, California. Together, Robert2 and Maggie May had one daughter they named Miriam (born January 8, 1908 and died at the age of 66 on November 10, 1974 in Pebble Beach California). Sometime shortly before or after their daughter Miriam was born (1908), the family moved to Montana where they owned and operated a ranch near the town of Billings.

During his life, Robert2 Skipp Jr. (b. 1874 - d. 1946) had various occupations including Fireman (perhaps on a train?), Street Construction Foreman, Railroad Brakeman (Pennsylvania RR in Trenton N.J.), Baseball Player (probably just for fun), and Rancher. His grand daughters remember being told that he never got past the sixth grade. They think this was because his father died when he was 11 or 12 years old and when his mother remarried, he left home because he didn't get along with his step-father.
Edward2 Skipp (Robert1) was born March 1877 and died on April 15, 1900 at the age of 23 without wife or children. His death notice indicates he was preceeded in death by his father Robert1 and confirms that his mother was named Mary. The death notice also indicates he lived at 34 Cherry Street, Buffalo, N.Y. and that he had been a member of the 74th Regiment, Company D. Edward2 is buried next to his father(Robert1) in the Buffalo Cemetery, Lot 11, Section B, grave 127.
