Irons Family DNA Project

The following genealogy of Samuel1 IRONS, patriarch of the Rhode Island IRONS family branch was gleaned mostly from records in the FamilySearch.org database, so take it with a grain of salt.  Much work remains.

Samuel1 IRONS, patriarch of the Rhode Island IRONS family branch was probably born sometime between 1678 and 1686.  We can place his date of death in early 1721 because according to James Hook, his will was written on 31 Dec. 1720 and proved on 11 Feb. 1721.  The will (according to Hook) referred to his wife and children without naming any of them specifically.  Also, in his recorded death notice, he was referred to as a “Tailor.”  Virtually all records agree that Samuel married a woman named Sarah WHIPPLE on 3 May 1709.  Her father was Jonathan WHIPPLE.  As for who Samuel’s parents were, it is generally believed that they were Samuel IRONS (son of Matthew IRONS of Boston) and Sarah BELCHER who lived and died in Braintree, Massachusetts.  As likely as this is, it remains to be proved through documentation or other means – which despite substantial effort and research, this writer has not seen or heard of.   Many records pertaining to Samuel1 IRONS also indicate he had a twin.  However, there is no indication of what this twin’s name was or if his twin was a brother or sister.  It is possible that his twin was the girl named Ruth, daughter of Samuel and Sarah IRONS, who’s birth on 16 Nov. 1678 was recorded in the Town book of Braintree, Massachusettes.  Finally, a marriage record indicates his widow Sarah WHIPPLE may have married John WARNER on 8 Oct. 1722.  Hook mistakenly attributes this marriage to Samuel and Sarah’s (WHIPPLE) daughter Sarah, however this is unlikely because the daughter would only have been two years old at the time of the marriage.

Children and descendants of Samuel1 IRONS and Sarah WHIPPLE were:

|---  Jonathon2 (Samuel1), born 12 Jul. 1709 in Providence, Rhode Island.  Died 28 Dec. 1799 and buried at the Steer-Irons Cemetery/Irons Family Farm in Glocester, Providence, Rhode Island.  No known children.

|---  Jeremiah2 (Samuel1), born 29 Nov. 1711 in Providence, Rhode Island and died before 1778/90 in Providence, Rhode Island.  Married Bethia WIGEAR on 29 Sep. 1734.  She was born about 1715 – probably in Providence, Rhode Island.  Their children were:

|--- Sarah3 (Jeremiah2, Samuel1), born 12 Aug. 1735 in Glocester or Providence, Rhode Island.

|--- Bethia3 (Jeremiah2, Samuel1), born 9 May 1738 in Glocester or Providence, Rhode Island.

|--- William3 (Jeremiah2, Samuel1), born 6 Dec. 1742 in Glocester or Providence, Rhode Island.  Married Bethany POTTER 14 May 1767 at Cranston, Providence, Rhode Island.  There is also a record for a William IRONS marrying Sarah MERRITHEW 12 Jun. 1794 at Foster, Providence, Rhode Island.  This may be the William IRONS recorded in the 1782 Rhode Island census with two males under age 16, one female under age 16, and one female aged 22-50 in his household.

|--- Samuel3 (Jeremiah2, Samuel1), born 29 Oct. 1744 in Glocester or Providence, Rhode Island.  One record found indicating he married in 1764, but wife’s name is not provided.  This is probably is the Samuel IRONS who migrated to Sackville, Nova Scotia in about 1760-61 and who first appears there in a list of Sackville individuals dated 1765.  For more on this, see my transcription of a Nova Scotia Land Grant dated 1774.  So far, the oldest document I have seen mentioning this Samuel IRONS is the Land Grant which was re-registered (1786) in the newly created province of New Brunswick.

|--- Bethia3 (Jeremiah2, Samuel1), born 17 Feb. 1746 in Glocester or Providence, Rhode Island.

|--- Jeremiah Jr.3 (Jeremiah2, Samuel1), born 17 Jun. 1749 died 5 May 1840.  Married Abigail BOWEN 19 Mar. 1790.  This may be the Jeremiah IRONS JR. recorded in the 1782 Rhode Island census with two males under age 16, two females under age 16, one female aged 22-50, and one female aged over 50 in his household.

|--- Samuel2 Jr. (Samuel1), born 10 Oct. 1713 in Providence, Rhode Island and died on 27 Nov. 1793 in Glocester or Providence, Rhode Island.  Married Lydia MATTHEWSON had a daughter they named Sarah about 1739 in Warwick, Kent, Rhode Island.  Lydia and the daughter Sarah must have died as another record indicates that in about 1739 Samuel2 married Hannah WATERMAN.  Some records indicate her first name might have been “Resolved.”  However, most say Hannah.  Hannah was born about Jan. 1720.  Her father and mother were Resolved and Mercy WATERMAN.  The children of Samuel2 IRONS and Hannah WATERMAN were:

|--- Resolved3 (Samuel2, Samuel1), male born about 1740 in Providence, Rhode Island.  Married to Phebe DEXTER in about 1759.  This is probably the Resolved IRONS recorded in the 1782 Rhode Island census with one male under age 16, three females under age 16, and one female aged 22-50 in his household.

|--- Stephen3 (Samuel2, Samuel1), born about 1741/42 in Providence, Rhode Island.  This is probably the Stephen IRONS recorded in the 1782 Rhode Island census with one male under age 16, one female under age 16, and one female aged 22-50 in his household.

|--- Samuel3 (Samuel2, Samuel1), born about 1743/44 in Providence, Rhode Island.  No known wife or children. Probably died before 1757.

|--- Sarah3 (Samuel2, Samuel1), born about 1746 in Providence, Rhode Island.

|--- Mercy3 (Samuel2, Samuel1), born about 1748 in Providence, Rhode Island.

|--- Hannah3 (Samuel2, Samuel1), born about 1750 in Providence, Rhode Island.

|--- Lydia3 (Samuel2, Samuel1), born about 1752 in Providence, Rhode Island.

|--- Mary3 (Samuel2, Samuel1), born about 1754 in Providence, Rhode Island.

|--- Samuel3 (Samuel2, Samuel1), born about 1757 in Providence, Rhode Island. Married Huldah COLWELL in about 1780.  Her parents were Joseph COLWELL and Amy WINSOR.  Huldah was born about 1780 and died about 1828 in Providence, Rhode Island.  It is most likely this Samuel3 who is listed in the North Providence, RI Military Census taken on Apr. 19, 1777 as “Irons, Saml ye 3rd” aged 16 to 50 -- able to bear arms. This is also probably the Samuel IRONS JR. recorded in the 1782 Rhode Island census with six males under age 16, two females under age 16, one male aged 16-22, one female aged 16-22, and one female aged 22-50 in his household.

Children of Samuel3 IRONS and Huldah COLWELL were:

|--- Candance4 (Samuel3, Samuel2, Samuel1), female born about 1782 in Providence, Rhode Island.

|--- Amasa4 (Samuel3, Samuel2, Samuel1), male born about 1784 in Providence, Rhode Island.  Other records indicate he was born in Nov. 1787.  He died 24 Jun. 1872.  In about 1807/1808 he married Anna (or Hannah) BLACKMAR or BLACKMER.  She was born about 1798 at Thompson, Windham, Connecticut.   Children of Amasa4 IRONS and Anna BLACKMAR were:

|--- Lucy5 (Amasa4, Samuel3, Samuel2, Samuel1) female born 11 Apr. 1809.

|--- Almira5 (Amasa4, Samuel3, Samuel2, Samuel1) female born about 1812.

|--- William5 (Amasa4, Samuel3, Samuel2, Samuel1) male born about 1815.  This may be the same “William H. Irons” who on 5 May 1842 is reported to have married Miranda S. BAKER at Providence, Rhode Island.  No known children from this marriage.  The 1880 Census for Wellington, Tolland, Connecticut shows William and his family (see Family History Library Film #1254109 page 255D).  In this record his wife’s name is Sarah and her age is given as 55 meaning she was born about 1825.  Children living in the household were:

|--- Everett6 (William5, Amasa4, Samuel3, Samuel2, Samuel1) male born about 1854 in Rhode Island.

|--- Sarah C.6 (William5, Amasa4, Samuel3, Samuel2, Samuel1) female male born about 1867 in Rhode Island.

|--- Phebe A.6 (William5, Amasa4, Samuel3, Samuel2, Samuel1) male born about 1868 in Rhode Island.

|--- Charles N.6 (William5, Amasa4, Samuel3, Samuel2, Samuel1) male born about 1864 in Rhode Island.

|--- Amasa5 (Amasa4, Samuel3, Samuel2, Samuel1) male born about 1819 at Smithfield Twp., Providence, Rhode Island, and died 22 Sep. 1894.  Amasa5 married Sarah Manton SWEET.  Upon the death of her father Stephen SWEET in 1854, Sarah inherited the “Clemence” homestead located at 38 George Waterman Road, Johnston, Rhode Island.  This property now called the “Clemence-Irons House” consists of various buildings on about 15 acres and is now owned/maintained by the Society for Preservation of New England Antiquities (SPNEA).

Other Related IRONS’ families:

From “The Mayflower Descendant Vol. 43, No. 1, January 1993, page 79”  I have the following IRONS Family Bible information regarding an Elisha Irons and his children that was originally published in New York, 1843 By J.S. Redfield, Clinton Hall; formerly in possession of Howard G. Hubbard, original pages on file at New England Historical Society.  According to the record, this Elisha IRONS was born 16 Feb. 1774.  From subsequent census records showing his children, we know he lived in Rhode Island and was most likely born there.  We don’t know who his father was, but from his age and place where he was living, we can be fairly confident he was a grandson or great-grandson of Samuel1 IRONS and Sarah WHIPPLE.  From the family bible record and subsequent 1880 census records, we have the following:

Elisha4 (Unknown3, Unknown4, Samuel1) IRONS born 16 Feb. 1774 in Rhode Island, married to Hanna who was born 23 March 1765.  Based on a search of FamilySearch.org database, her maiden name may have been ALDRICH.  Children according to the bible record were:

|--- Barbara5 (Elisha4, Unknown3, Unknown4, Samuel1) born 16 Nov. 1798

|--- Sayles5 (Elisha4, Unknown3, Unknown4, Samuel1) born 2 May 1799.  The 1880 census for Providence, Rhode Island, lists a head of household named “Mrs. Sayles IRONS” who was a widow.  The record shows her to be 67 years old which would mean she was born about 1813.  This widow was very likely the wife of this Sayles5  IRONS.  Living with the widow of Sayles IRONS in 1880 were the following relatives:

|--- Hannah F. S. IRONS, a single daughter aged 45.

|--- Mary E.I. RUSSELL, a married daughter aged 40.

|--- Charles T. IRONS, a single son aged 37 occupied as “Manufacturer of Jewelry.”

|--- Charles A. RUSSELL, a single grandson aged 20, occupied as a “Clerk in Jewelry.”

|--- Simon5 (Elisha4, Unknown3, Unknown4, Samuel1) born 14 Oct. 1803

|--- Candace5 (Elisha4, Unknown3, Unknown4, Samuel1) born 20 Mar. 1804

|--- Amey5 (Elisha4, Unknown3, Unknown4, Samuel1) born 3 May 1807

|--- Esther A.5 (Elisha4, Unknown3, Unknown4, Samuel1) born 17 Oct. 1811

|--- Fenner A.5 (Elisha4, Unknown3, Unknown4, Samuel1) born 19 Mar. 1814 married Elizabeth who was about the same age.  Point of interest – a John FENNER shows up in the 1782 census for Providence Rhode Island.  According to the 1880 census for Cumberland, Providence, Rhode Island, his father and mother’s place of birth was Rhode Island and the following were living with him and his wife Elizabeth:

|--- Lucy A. a daughter who was born about 1852.  Her marital status is shown as “single.”

|--- Benjamin WEEDEN a grandson born about 1858.  His marital status is shown as “married.”

|--- Annie WEEDEN a granddaughter born about 1859.  Her marital status is shown as “married” and no doubt means she is married to Fenner IRONS grandson above.

|--- Fenner WEEDEN a grandson born about 1860.  His marital status is shown as “single.”

|--- Charlotte F.5 (Elisha4, Unknown3, Unknown4, Samuel1) born 8 May 1817

|--- Horatio N.5 (Elisha4, Unknown3, Unknown4, Samuel1) born 26 Oct. 1819
